A-G Requirements
The “A-G requirements” are a set of specific courses that California high school students must complete to be eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems straight out of high school. These requirements are also often the same for admission to other four-year universities. The courses cover key subject areas—such as English, math, science, history, art, foreign language, and college preparatory electives—and must meet certain standards.
Think of the A-G requirements as a checklist to ensure students are academically prepared for college-level work. If students meet these requirements, they’ll have the foundation needed to apply to UC, CSU, and many other four-year schools after graduation. Even if students aren’t sure about attending a four-year university, it’s recommended that they aim to complete these requirements. It’s better to meet them and not need them than to wish you had later on.
