Work Permits
Work Permits
In California, minors—including high school students—are legally required to have a work permit to hold a job. This applies year-round, even during summer, and for all employers, including parents or guardians.
Working Hours
- 16 & 17-Year-Olds: Can work up to 4 hours on school days and 8 hours on non-school days. Total work hours cannot exceed 40 per week.
- 14 & 15-Year-Olds: Can only get a work permit under special circumstances. They are not allowed to work on school days, and their hours are limited to a maximum of 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week.
